Epsom Salts as a Temporary Natural Treatment for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are inflamed pockets of tissue and veins that form in and around the anal area. They can be very uncomfortable, causing pain, itching, irritation and rectal bleeding after bowel movements. Often, CRH patients are desperate to find some relief from the discomfort of their condition while they wait for permanent treatment.

There are several natural at-home treatments that reduce the swelling of hemorrhoids and can provide short term relief for the sufferer. One of such remedies is the use of Epsom salts, either in a sitz bath or as a compress.

Using Epsom Salts In A Sitz Bath

A Sitz Bath is a special kind of immersive bath that the user can sit in, so that the liquid in it is in direct contact with the anal area and can aid in relieving the itching, the burning sensation and the inflammation depending on what the active substance in the bath is.

The addition of Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) to the sitz bath is a great way to provide temporary relief from hemorrhoids.

It can also be used as a compress applied directly to the inflamed area. We’ll go through both using this at-home treatment as a bath and as a compress below.

Before starting any treatments for hemorrhoids at home, you should consult your physician so that they can ensure that it is safe for you. Also note that Epsom Salts should not be taken orally for treating hemorrhoids.

How To Use Epsom Salts in a Sitz Bath

You will need:

  • A bathtub
  • Warm water
  • Epsom salt
  • An optional hemorrhoid treatment agent like apple cider vinegar/coconut oil to mix into the bath as well.

Procedure:

  • Fill up the bath with warm water. If it is in a bathtub, add in enough water to comfortably sit in.
  • Add in two cups of Epsom salts and mix in well.
  • At this point you can add the additional agents like ACV or coconut oil.
  • Sit in the bath, exposing the affected area to the water.
  • Do this for 30 minutes once or twice a day for fast temporary relief.

Epsom salts can be purchased at any drug store as can the other home remedies (like coconut oil and apple cider vinegar) which may provide symptomatic relief. Always make sure you are using genuine, unexpired agents to ensure their efficacy.

How to Use Epsom Salts As a Compress

You will need:

  • A bowl/bucket
  • Epsom salts
  • Clean warm water
  • A wash cloth

Procedure:

  • Make sure you wash your hands before applying this compress to prevent contamination or infection.
  • Mix one cup of Epsom salts in half a gallon of warm water and make sure that it dissolves fully.
  • Soak the wash cloth in the mixture and wring out the extra water.
  • Apply the compress to the affected area and hold it there for ten to fifteen minutes.

Repeat twice daily for best results.

Hemorrhoid Banding is a Permanent Solution for Hemorrhoids

Take note that while the use of Epsom salts serves the purpose of providing relief from the symptoms and soothing the affected areas. It is generally not helpful in providing lasting relief for the condition. For long-lasting treatment, hemorrhoid banding is the least-invasive treatment on the market.

Unlike Epsom salts, hemorrhoid banding is a permanent solution to hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoid Banding, otherwise called Rubber band Ligation, is a treatment for both internal and external hemorrhoids. The CRH O’Regan System is the leading hemorrhoid banding treatment offered by doctors across the United States. During the CRH O’Regan System procedure the doctor attaches a small band to the base of the hemorrhoid, with the overall aim of stopping the supply of blood to the hemorrhoidal mass. In the following days or weeks, the hemorrhoid shrinks and withers away. The shrivelled mass as well as the band normally falls off during a regular bowel movement – in most cases, without the patient noticing. The treatment is pain-free, covered by most insurance providers and most patients can perform their regular daily activities without interference afterwards.
