Delmar R. Aitken, MD, FACSDr. Aitken is board certified in General Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He graduated suma cum laude from Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska. His medical degree was obtained at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1973 where he also completed his General Surgery Residency training in 1979.
In 1983, Dr. Aitken completed a two year Surgical Oncology Fellowship at James Cancer Center, Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. During his Fellowship he did much of the basic science research that lead to the development of the Neoprobe which is now used world wide in the detection of sentinel lymph nodes in individuals with breast cancer or melanoma. He was the first surgeon to use the Neoprobe for the detection of breast cancer and colon cancer.
Dr. Aitken implemented the use of intraoperative radiation for unresectable tumors at the universities - Loma Linda and Ohio State University.
While he was at Loma Linda University, Dr. Aitken was involved in clinical research and has published extensively in areas related to cancer surgery. In 1994 and 1996, he was recognized as Faculty Researcher of the Year at Loma Linda University.
Since 2000, Dr. Aitken has been in private practice in the Coachella Valley. In 2005, he was acknowledged by his peers as one of the Top Doctors of the Coachella Valley. He was also recognized by "Consumers Research Council of America" as one of the nation's Top Surgeons in 2007. Dr. Aitken and his wife, Cheree Aitken, RN, have two daughters and enjoy relaxing with music and exercise.
