Michael J. Guirl, M.D.
Dr. Guirl attended Madison High School. In addition to his private practice of gastroenterology, he also has served as Medical Director for Liver Transplantation at the Texas Transplant Institute at Methodist Hospital. He is highly trained to perform advanced endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and therapeutic endoscopy. He also has developed a special interest in evaluating patients with difficult to diagnose small bowel disorders or occult gastrointestinal bleeding utilizing the recently developed wireless capsule endoscopy procedure. He has continued to participate in clinical teaching and professional organizations and presently serves on the Board of Directors for the Texas Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. He and his wife, Jennifer, have three children and are active members of the University United Methodist Church in San Antonio. In his free time, Dr. Guirl is a competitive swimmer and enjoys attending as many UT home football games as possible.
Richard T. Shaffer, M.D.
Dr. Shaffer’s collegiate experience has earned him recognition in the Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Maryland. After obtaining his M.D. degree from George Washington University, Dr. Shaffer entered the United States Army, where he has had a distinguished career, receiving numerous Achievement and Accommodation Awards. For the last 15 years, Dr. Shaffer has been associated with Brooke Army Medical Center, most recently acting as Director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program, where he has been responsible for the education and training of countless new gastroenterology physicians. He maintains a Clinical Assistant Professorship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he serves as the Advanced Physical Diagnosis Preceptor for the medical school. Dr. Shaffer and his wife, Stephanie Levine, M.D., are the proud parents of four children. He is also an accomplished writer with numerous abstracts and publications throughout the medical community while continuing to be active in professional organizations, such as the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
