Douglas Howerton, MD
Dr. Douglas Howerton was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and graduated with honors (Alpha Omega Alpha) from West Virginia School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he earned distinction as Chief GI Fellow. He also completed an advanced endoscopy fellowship in therapeutic ERCP at St. Luke’s Hospital, Racine, Wisconsin, in association with the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Howerton has been board certified in gastroenterology since 1993.
Dr. Howerton joined Gastroenterology Associates in 1993. His professional interests include pancreaticobiliary disorders, sphincter-of-Oddi dysfunction, therapeutic ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), endoluminal stenting, and colorectal cancer. Dr. Howerton serves as an Associate Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Gary Payman, MD
Dr. Gary Payman was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. He graduated Magna cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science in Neuroscience from the University of Rochester. He earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and completed his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Payman has been board certified in gastroenterology since 2004.
Dr. Payman joined Gastroenterology Associates in July of 2004. His professional interests include colorectal cancer, GERD, constipation, occult GI bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology, and ERCP.
Michael Sperling, MD
Dr. Michael Sperling was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Pharmacy at the University of North Carolina, and his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, where he was the Chief Resident of Internal Medicine. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at University of Virginia. Dr. Sperling has been board certified in gastroenterology since 1981. He joined Gastroenterology Associates in July of 1980. His professional interests are in colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, chronic constipation, chronic abdominal pain, M2A capsule, and GERD. Dr. Sperling is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine and a mentor to first and second year students at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Bruce Waldholtz, MD
Dr. Bruce Waldholtz was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated Summa cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychobiology from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Waldholtz graduated from medical school at the University of Pittsburgh; he completed his internal medicine residency at Johns Hopkins University/Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and then his gastroenterology fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Waldholtz has been board certified in gastroenterology since 1989.Dr. Waldholtz joined Gastroenterology Associates in July of 1988. His professional interests are hereditary polyps/colon cancer syndromes, hiatal hernias, GERD, eating disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Waldholtz serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School and mentors first and second year medical students.
Alex Williams, MD
Dr. Alex Williams was born in Lagos, Nigeria and attended the University of Ibadan in Nigeria for both his undergraduate and medical degrees. He received his M.Sc. in Community Medicine at the College of Medicine, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, UK. While in England, he was accepted into the Royal College of Physicians (UK). Upon arriving in the United States, he completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut. He then completed his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Virginia. Dr. Williams has been board certified in gastroenterology since 2001.Dr. Williams joined Gastroenterology Associates in July of 2001. His professional interests include colorectal cancer, occult GI bleeding, M2A capsule, hepatology and ERCP. Dr. Williams serves as an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Williams is very proud to have become an American citizen in May 2003.
